Exploring Old San Juan is an essential part of any vacation Puerto Rico. This historic coastal area originally was settled by Spanish colonists in 1521 and became an important garrison and the port city during the rule of Spain in the Caribbean. Today, the area is a charming mix of narrow streets and ornate stripes and an official Spanish colonial architecture, and interesting art galleries and shops for all budgets. One of the most popular attractions in the seven square block is the Catedral de San Juan, started in 1540, and has beautiful stained glass windows. The cathedral is also the final resting place of explorer, Ponce de Leon.
A short walk from Old San Juan is the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, known popularly as "El Morro." Located on a promontory jutting out into San Juan harbor, this fortress was built in 1540 as an important defense for the conquest of Spain from the Caribbean. Just down the road from Old San Juan is Condado Beach, a long beach with white sand, was first discovered as a beach resort back in 1920. Today, this area is lined with high-rise resort hotels and condos and is filled with activities. Water sports abound here, and guests can try windsurfing, parasailing (with a view of historic Old San Juan), snorkeling and deep sea fishing, among other activities. Ponce, on the southern coast of Puerto Rico, is the second largest city in the country is ideal for travelers looking for a historical rather than a beach holiday associated with Puerto Rico. This beautiful city has over 1000 restored buildings, including Spanish Colonial houses with ornate wrought iron balconies and 1930 vintage Art Deco buildings. The area is full of charming parks and sparkling sea. It is also home to the Museo de Arte de Ponce, a museum filled with outstanding examples of European and Latin American art.
